When comparing quotes, always check if the price is calculated per Square Meter (SM²) or per Running Meter. This distinction is critical because as your countertop gets wider, the price difference can be massive.

The Comparison

To see how this affects your pocket, let’s look at Rustenburg Granite:

Standard Countertops (1000mm x 600mm):At R2000 per SM², the cost is R1200.
At a Running Meter rate, the cost is also R1200. They look the same here.

Wider Countertops (1000mm x 900mm):
At R2000 per SM², the cost jumps to R1800.
At a Running Meter rate, the cost stays at R1200.

The Bottom Line: Don’t just look at the number; look at the unit of measurement. Always confirm whether you are being quoted for SM² or running meters to ensure you aren’t overpaying for wider surfaces like breakfast bars or islands.
